March 14, 2025

Resonac Europe GmbH has obtained ISCC PLUS certification for acrylonitrile, an internationally recognized certification system for sustainable products.

With this certification, derivative products that incorporate chemically recycled post-consumer plastics as part of their raw materials at Resonac’s Kawasaki Plant can now be assigned post-consumer plastic-derived attributes based on the mass balance approach under the certification system and sold accordingly. The specific timeline for implementation will be determined in coordination with each business partner.

■ Target Product:

Acrylonitrile

■ ISCC PLUS Certification

ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), an independent third-party organization, operates this international certification system to ensure the sustainability of biomass, recycled raw materials, and products, as well as their proper management throughout the supply chain. The certification is particularly useful in promoting the use of biomass and recycled raw materials in complex production processes through the mass balance approach.

■ Mass Balance Approach

This approach allows the free allocation of sustainability attributes to one or more specific products based on the proportion of sustainable raw materials, such as biomass or recycled feedstock, mixed with non-sustainable raw materials during production. By utilizing existing manufacturing processes, we can promote the use of sustainable materials while maintaining current quality and performance. This approach also enables consumers to contribute to a sustainable society by purchasing environmentally friendly products. The mass balance method is expected to see increased adoption in the chemical industry moving forward.

Resonac Europe GmbH commits to complying with ISCC PLUS requirements in accordance with the latest ISCC regulations.
